Changes To The Law For Construction Industry Induction Certificate (Green Card)

The current law requires all new employees in the construction industry to undergo compulsory OHS induction training. Currently the training company issues what is known as a ‘green card’, to prove that a person has undergone their training.

From the 29th of March 2004 the trainer or training company will no longer be allowed to issue this card.

WorkCover NSW will now issue the card for all Construction Induction Certificate courses in the form of a credit card sized card to participants upon completion of the course in OHS General Induction for Construction Work in New South Wales.

The certificate will be compulsory for each person as proof of completion of OHS General Induction for Construction Work training.

The certificate does not effect the mandatory requirement for persons working on construction sites to undertake this type of training.

What does it mean for current cardholders?

Current Green Card Holders have up to two years to apply for a new WorkCover Construction Induction Certificate.

If you:

  • have already completed the OHS General Induction for Construction Work training and
  • have the WorkCover Statement of Training, a Statement of Training from an Approved Provider or a “Green Card” which contains the appropriate details in order to verify the training took place

then you are able to apply to WorkCover to convert this proof of training to the WorkCover Construction Induction Certificate free of charge.

After 29 March 2006 only the WorkCover Construction Induction Certificate will be acceptable proof of completion of training. Therefore you must have a WorkCover Construction Induction Certificate by 29 March 2006.

If you:

  • have not completed the OHS General Induction for Construction Work training, or
  • have no proof of completing the training

you must complete the OHS General Induction for Construction Work training.

At this training the trainer will provide you with an application form for a WorkCover Construction Induction Certificate. You will receive the Certificate direct from WorkCover within 30 days. Before you receive the Certificate you can use the Statement of Training from your trainer. This is only valid for 30 days.

Is there any cost for obtaining the certificate?

WorkCover will provide the Construction Induction Certificate FREE OF CHARGE for persons trained after 29 March 2004 as well as those persons trained previously who apply for a conversion.

This is just in regard to the certificate. Training undertaken to obtain the certificate may incur a cost. Be sure to enquire with your training provider.

But if your WorkCover card is lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed, there is a $30 replacement fee.
